Mr. Andersson

Year 1942 and specifically on March 23rd, Mr. Andersson was serving as a driver in one of the modern miracles. It was there in the crowded cabin that he got the initial idea on how to escape direct mailing companies and their sales efforts. But for now it had to wait as Mr. Andersson was going to serve the country and do his part by being a hero.

Don’t do as I do but as I say. This great advice could be given to most marketers. I know it rings true in my case. We all know that there are things we should do - we should follow up, we should cold call, we should record our numbers, we should… well, you continue the list, I start to feel too depressed already.

DON’T WRITE OUT OF THE BOX
People are happy when you don’t challenge their beliefs. You can have a great post on some sports team and how even in defeat it manages to be worthy of fandom. You audience will consist of those who support the team and they are not trying to find something to change their minds on the contrary they look for something to enforce their belief.  Just imagine their reaction if some day you say that you’ve had it and you are changing teams.

Take this same case out of football field and in front of you, your screen. Are you using Mac or PC? What if long-time Mac user turns into PC and flips the blog… I’d say it wouldn’t go down nicely among regular readers. In similar manner one has to be consistent with the topic and not jump around and outside of the box. Plus we have all that negative aspect, in which we love to mock something and feel bonded by doing so…

GRASS ROOT EXAMPLE
I came across this guy - Aman - at John Chow website. He seems to be nice enough guy (John too for that matter) and he writes a blog about stocks. You can go to his about page and check out what kind of a guy he is, pretty impressive, don’t you think? Now take a look at the posts that are available on his website. Does anything jump out of the brand? Yes, free offers and make money with surveys.

Just humor with me here. If a visitor comes to Aman’s site and is offered with two different messages, one with make money by investing into stocks and one with make cents by taking surveys. Does that put you to confident hands? I for one would like my investment adviser to talk about stocks and possibly fast cars, because they are not in competition with each other as money making machines.

DO AS I SAY
My advice to Aman and to all other bloggers, myself included, is to first set the general tone of blog’s marketing message. When you get this done you know if your next post will or will not fit to your blog’s styley and in time series of posts will build your brand. When it’s time to make money with the blog it is easier if any kind of brand has been established - even shitty brand is better than no brand at all.
