Checking my numbers once a month

My blog business is very small, just look at it, I don’t sell anything and I give out free advertising for anyone that is active enough to ask for it. So my dollar numbers are terrible while on the positive side my traffic volume is growing.

PURPOSE OF METRICS
Naturally the purpose of metrics depends the nature of one’s activity. Non-profit organisation might be obsessed with donations, steel mill is probably focusing on their output of steel and websites are looking at their traffic. Numbers show if one’s activity is running problem free and it can also help to innovate new solutions.

Look at it flow.

Look at it flow.

MY PURPOSE
Like I said, my main interest is not money, instead I am interested about traffic. I think of website traffic flow as flowing water. I need little streams to make a huge river with a waterfall or two along the way. The thing with water is that you can manipulate it. One can build damns or channels to leash it and benefit from it. So now I could call myself as a water management person (I’ve heard funnier titles than that).

Traffic falling from the sky.

Traffic falling from the sky.

ONCE A MONTH
OK, why once a month? Isn’t it so that one should set priorities straight and then fervently obsess about them? Could be, but then you focus too much on that one thing. I like to keep traffic building simple. I choose my methods for the month and work on it every day. At the end of the month it is good to use some time to check how it all went and what seemed to work. Following month follows the same path than the previous one with just little adjustments.

STICK TO IT
This I’ve learned the hard way. You have to focus and commit in the long term. When you first start with your chicken fodder website and see how those ringtone sites are overtaking you from left and right… well, at that point an idea starts to form, maybe this chicken fodder idea wasn’t so good in the first place, because everybody seems to be doing great with ringtones.

New site to the rescue, old one to the ice and with it dies few months of work. Well, that ringtone site turns out to be a failure, because at that point it looks like market in crowded and there is no room for one more. So then it is another trend and finally after year or two there are a trail of wrecked websites behind you and somebody has amazingly hit the jackpot with an obscure site about chicken fodder. Stick to it, build on what you already have and modify slightly only after checking your numbers.
